The BEI investigates following an intervention involving the SQ
At around 11:00 pm on October 19, the Bureau des Enquêtes Indépendes (BEI) launched an independent investigation into the circumstances of an intervention involving the Sûreté du Québec.
Preliminary information provided to the OII suggests the following:
- At around 9:30 p.m. on the same day, police officers reportedly spotted an electric motorcycle in violation of the Highway Safety Code;
- The police officers attempted to intercept the motorcycle using their flashing lights;
- The police then turned off their flashing lights;
- The motorcycle collided with another vehicle;
- The driver of the motorcycle was seriously injured and subsequently taken to hospital, where his condition was said to be serious.
The mission of the Independent Investigation Bureau is to shed full light on the facts surrounding the police intervention. The OII investigates all cases in which a person, other than an on-duty police officer, dies, suffers a serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during a police intervention or while in police custody.
Four BEI investigators were assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Given the circumstances of the event, the support services of a police force, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, were requested.
The EIB is asking anyone who may have witnessed this event to contact it via its website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca/nous.
