LGBTQ+
Marker X now available on RAMQ card
Since October 10, the gender X marker can be affixed to health insurance cards (CAM) by those who request it, according to the same rules already in force with civil status.
In Quebec, inclusive welcome means openness to all differences, including those related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. It aims to make care environments more inclusive and secure, to provide adapted care and thus strengthen the ability of LGBTQ+ people to assert themselves.
Although the health insurance card is not an identity card, but a card used primarily to confirm eligibility for the health insurance plan for the purposes of access to care and services under the RSSS, it is also used by certain organizations (public and private) to confirm the identity of individuals. It will therefore be possible to find the following markers:
F = female
H = male
X = non-binary
How to obtain a CAM with the gender marker X?
Since June 2022 (Bill n◦2), trans and non-binary people have been able to request the inscription, on their birth or death certificate, of a sex marker that corresponds to their gender identity.
- In order to register an X (non-binary) on one's health insurance card (CAM-X), a preliminary procedure must be completed at the Directeur de l'état civil (DEC).
- Once this procedure has been completed, the user can apply to the Régie de l'assurance maladie (RAMQ) for a CAM-X.
