On January 28, the Court of Quebec fined Amritpal Singh, 32, of Brampton, Ontario, $1 million for his involvement in a tobacco smuggling operation. Singh was caught driving a semi-trailer on boulevard Monseigneur-Langlois on December 8, 2021.

Earlier on February 18, Revenu Québec announced that six people, including Mr. Singh, had been convicted of tobacco smuggling offences. They were ordered by the Court of Quebec to pay fines totalling $1,485,850. Two offenders were also sentenced to prison terms.

These individuals were accused of one or more of the following activities:

- selling, delivering or having in their possession tobacco intended for retail sale in Quebec, and
the package of which was not identified in accordance with the Tobacco Tax Act;

- have transported tobacco intended for sale, the package of which was not identified in accordance with the Tobacco Tax Act;

- not be registered with Revenu Québec or hold any of the permits required by law to carry out commercial activities related to tobacco products.

According to the facts presented by Revenu Québec, on December 8, 2021, roadside inspectors intercepted a tractor-trailer truck driving in a prohibited zone on boulevard Monseigneur-Langlois, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. Traffic controllers discovered that the truck driven by Amritpal Singh was filled with crates of raw tobacco. Police from the Sûreté du Québec and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called to assist. A total of 132 boxes of raw tobacco, loaded on 44 pallets, were seized, for a total shipment of 14,199 kilograms.

The offender was convicted on December 2 and sentenced on January 28. His driver's license was suspended for 30 days.
