Winter storm: how to prepare for a prolonged power outage?
For the second time in a few days, a snowstorm is heading straight for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. With precipitation, there are times when long-term power outages occur. How do you prepare for this?
Hydro-Québec shares on its website, a series of tips to follow to ensure the comfort of members of his home during this unplanned interruption:
- Recharge the batteries of electronic devices in advance so that they can be used for work or play during service interruption.
- Consider downloading movies, music or work/study materials before the break as residential modems require power to connect to the internet;
- To maintain the temperature of the refrigerator or freezer, provide snacks for which you will not have to open the doors of appliances;
- List emergency numbers in advance, including the Hydro-Québec number (1 800 790-2424) to call for breakdown;
- Have a battery-powered radio or portable mobile device charger so you can follow the progress of the situation, in case of major outage, from the Current Outages map or via the mobile app;
- Prepare an emergency kit and store it in an easily accessible place. Check the contents regularly to ensure that they are complete and in working order;
- Place a battery-powered flashlight in the emergency kit to avoid using candles – these may present a fire hazard;
- Provide a backup power source or temporary shelter if someone living with you needs a survival device;
- Download the Hydro-Québec app to track outages and ensure you receive notifications about them.
