Moving house is stressful for human beings, but it can also be very difficult for pets such as dogs and cats.
They can easily become nervous and tense when faced with an unexpected commotion in their home or the introduction of a new environment.
Here are a few tips and solutions from Moving Canada to make moving pets easier.
1. Have a moving kit for pets
Prepare a kit that you'll have easy access to during the move to ensure a comfortable moving process for your pet. This includes healthy documents, food, water, a favorite toy and any medication your pet may be taking.
2. Keep your pets in action
The process tends to be very active; you may have yourself or others constantly in and out of the house, wrapping, packing and many other acts. The best way to keep your pet calm is to place it in a space with as little noise as possible.
If your pet prefers open spaces, walk past him often to remind him that you're always there. No one likes to be left out!
3. Travelling with your pet
It's a good idea to travel with your pets. Secure them in a carrier or kennel, depending on the size of your pet.
4. Let them adjust
It's best to try to create as much space in the new home before letting them in. This will prevent them from actively participating in the moving-in process, which will feel like moving.
Make sure that at least one part of the house presents itself as quiet so that your pet is as stress-free as possible.
5.Contact your vet
Tell your vet if you're leaving the area. It's a good idea to locate a new vet before you move. That way, if there's an emergency right after the move, you and your new vet can be prepared.
6. Update their information
Update pet tags and any additional documentation you have for them when your home address is given.
