Time Change: It Happens Tonight
The transition to winter time takes place on the night of Sunday, November 3, specifically at two in the morning, with the setting back of watches, clocks, and other timepieces.
Thus, Quebec returns to "standard" time (EST), giving everyone an extra hour of sleep, though evenings will become darker sooner.
Originally, the time change was introduced to save energy. This ritual was first implemented in Germany in 1916 and reached Canada two years later. The time change was standardized across Canada in 1963.
Just last Tuesday, the government of François Legault launched a wide-reaching online public consultation regarding the possible abolition of the time change in Quebec.
This proposal has both supporters and detractors.
For years, numerous experts have studied the impact of the time change on health. Specialists believe it may negatively affect our biological clock and sleep cycle.
Today, only about 20% of the world’s population changes their clocks each year.
The people of Quebec have until December 1 to share their opinion on this issue (consultation.quebec.ca). Based on the results, the government will decide whether to proceed with a bill on the matter.
In the meantime, don’t forget to adjust your clocks tonight!
This is also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning properly, allowing you to enjoy your extra hour of sleep... safely.
