"It's going to start, don't worry" - Yvon Chiasson
Construction of the future Saint-Zotique high school to begin shortly
In his monthly council meeting report published on social networks on Tuesday, Saint-Zotique mayor Yvon Chiasson gave an update on the new high school construction project. Having received many questions on the subject, Mr. Chiasson took advantage of the opportunity to outline the project's next steps.
"Starting August 2, trailers will be set up on the construction site. Then, from August 16 to 27, there will be civil engineering work, because as you know, the school will be pile-drived. Stake laying is scheduled for the week of August 23," he says.
To citizens who feared the project would never come to fruition, he said: "It's going to start, don't worry.
The future Saint-Zotique high school will be built at the corner of 20th Street and 26th Avenue. Opening is scheduled for the start of the 2023 school year.
Woodland protection
Yvon Chiasson also raised the fact that many citizens feared that the entire woodland in the area of the future school would be razed to the ground.
He pointed out that the school could not be built on an entirely wooded site, but that steps were being taken to protect the woodland.
"We're on the verge of concluding an agreement with the Ministry of the Environment to have our wetlands conservation plan. So, in the area north of 20th Street, there won't be many trees cut down, I can swear it," he said. The mayor also indicated that steps were underway to acquire certain lots to ensure their conservation.
According to Mr. Chiasson, the area's bike path will remain in the wooded area, and a large tree line extending to 20th Street will be preserved. " We are on the verge of reaching an agreement with the ministry, and we have been told that everything should be finalized by September," concludes Yvon Chiasson.
