At the Rigaud municipal council meeting on February 11, elected officials paid tribute to their colleague Archie Martin, who passed away on January 27 as a result of ill health. In an emotional ceremony, the elected officials took turns to share a farewell message for their former colleague.
For the occasion, Mr. Martin's family was present to receive the heartfelt and moving tributes.
Always very involved in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges community, Archie Martin served for 12 years on the Rigaud municipal council. On September 24, 2023, the Member of Parliament for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Peter Schiefke, recognized his unwavering commitment and dedication, as well as his essential role in the community, by presenting him with the Prix d'action communautaire 2024.
In 2024, he was also recognized as an Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).
Born in Escuminac, New Brunswick, Mr. Martin came from an Acadian Micmac family of 12 children. A proud representative of the First Nations, he was passionate about aboriginal culture and traditions, which he honoured and perpetuated for 17 years.
The loss of a great man
Elected municipal officials were full of praise for their late colleague. Many saw Archie Martin as a man of great wisdom and a mentor.
It was with sadness in their hearts that the elected officials took the floor to pay tribute to him, not only as a colleague, but also as a friend.
Mayor Marie-Claude Frigault underlined his commitment and sincere interest in all Rigaud citizens. “He always defended the interests of citizens. He was a unique and larger-than-life man.”
Charles Meunier spoke of how lucky he was to see Archie in his final hours, and underlined his courage. “I was lucky enough to see Archie in his last days. The Archie I saw was a brave, resilient, wise and encouraging man. A lesson in life, even in death.”
Marc Noël, for his part, was quick to recall the support Mr. Martin gave him in his early days in politics. “Archie, you were always ready to listen, you, the benevolent, quiet force. You helped me understand the political world, which I didn't know. You also told me the true story of our country. Continue to watch over yours and rest in peace, my friend.”
Visibly affected by the death of his colleague, Kevin Ménard emphasized the indelible mark left by Archie Martin. “Archie leaves a huge void in our lives, but also a precious legacy that will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Archie, and thank you for everything.”
Yves Pelletier recalled memories of his friend, long before they sat on the board together. “He was always a role model for me. Archie was larger than life, remarkable, solid... invincible. From above, I salute you, Archie.”
With his voice trembling, and struggling to hold back his tears, Alain Lapointe paid tribute not only to Archie, but also to his wife, Pierrette. “You formed an incredible duo in sharing aboriginal culture. Hats off to you, my friends, for your dedication. Today, it is with a heavy heart that I pay tribute to you, Archie, and say goodbye.”
District 2 to remain vacant
At the council meeting, it was announced that Archie Martin's position will remain vacant until the next election.
Citizens are also invited to sign the book of condolence that will be given to Archie Martin's family. Citizens wishing to sign the book can visit Rigaud Town Hall during opening hours, until Friday March 14.
