To no one's great surprise, the favourite to replace Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Mark Carney, was elected this Sunday, March 9, live from the Rogers Centre in Ottawa.

The election of the man who will become Canada's next Prime Minister in the coming hours was hailed by Peter Schiefke, MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

“With his unparalleled expertise in economics and decades of public service at the highest levels, Mark is ready to take on Donald Trump's attacks. I look forward to working with him and our Liberal caucus to protect Canada's sovereignty and our jobs, and build a stronger, fairer and more resilient economy for our community of Vaudreuil-Soulanges and all Canadians. Let's build the future!” said Mr. Schiefke.

Mr. Carney will be Canada's 24th Prime Minister. The former Governor of the Bank of Canada succeeds Justin Trudeau at a time when the country is engaged in an economic and trade battle with the United States.

Last February, Mr. Carney was in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges riding, where, alongside Peter Schiefke, he met with members of the Vaudreuil Federal Liberal Association, as well as citizens and representatives of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges business community.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting were the U.S. tariff threats against Canada. Job creation, affordability, the impact of climate change and the importance of local media.
