From April 1, residents of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, as well as those living throughout Quebec, will see their electricity bills rise by 3%. This decision has been far from unanimously supported since it was announced by the Régie de l'énergie on Thursday 6 March. 

The increase will apply to residential customers subject to domestic electricity rates. Among those opposing the increase is Premier François Legault, who has promised in the past to limit the increase to 3%. 

The Société d'État, Hydro-Québec, has issued a press release stating that it intends to appeal the decision. For the organization, ‘the Régie de l'énergie's decision to increase residential rates to 3.6% as of April 1, 2025 is not consistent with Quebec's social, economic and political context,’ it stated in a press release. Hydro-Québec goes on to say that it will continue to analyse the other aspects of this decision over the next few days. It is not impossible that the case will be brought before the Tribunal. 

Returning to the increase, it should be noted that residential customers will be subject to the same increase as commercial and institutional customers. For businesses and industries in the large-power category (Rate L), the bill will rise by 1.7%. 

In a post on X, Prime Minister François Legault reacted sharply :  'There's no question of it. As long as I am Prime Minister, residential rates will not rise by more than 3% a year. I will work with the government team and Hydro-Québec to find a solution'. 

One solution could be to amend Bill 69 (also known as An Act to ensure the governance of energy resources and to amend various legislative provisions). This is currently being studied by the National Assembly.
