On December 31, 2023, Quebec passed a law banning the use of smartphones in the classroom in the province's high schools. The law is still provoking mixed reactions, especially among students. That's why the topic inspired this week's poll question for the Néomédia team.

The government justifies this measure by citing the distractions caused by phones in the classroom, thus hindering learning. According to several education experts, the ban is intended to improve student concentration and foster an environment conducive to studying.

Exceptions to the rule

However, certain exceptions are provided for. Telephone use remains permitted when the teacher integrates it into a teaching activity, when a student's state of health requires it, or when a student has special needs due to a handicap, an adaptation or a learning difficulty.

This week, we ask you: should we ban cell phones from high schools?

Here are your choices:

- Yes, absolutely, because they're an obvious distraction;

- Yes, but we should still allow some exceptions;

- Yes, but we'd have to find a fair solution for everyone;

- No, it works well with current regulations;

- No, it shouldn't be a priority;
