Work on the new Vaudreuil-Soulanges hospital is progressing at a steady pace, according to a press release from the Fondation de l'Hôpital de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Significant progress has been made on the two future pavilions.
Work is also progressing on Pavilion A, the hospital's most important point of entry: the interior system is well underway, more than 50% of the masonry on the garden level is complete, and electromechanical work is continuing.
This four-storey pavilion will house the majority of ambulatory services, i.e. those that do not require hospitalization.
In Pavilion B, the columns on the 13th floor are being installed, while the lower floors are currently under construction, again using the staircase method to ensure precision and efficiency.
It will house the majority of critical functions, including emergency, operating theatre, critical care, medical imaging and the mother and child center. Several care units will be located there, including medicine, surgery, active geriatrics, stroke and brief hospitalization. The pharmacy and support areas for hospital operations will be located on the garden level.
Some 400 workers have been hard at work for several months on this site, which is the largest infrastructure project in the region. The future hospital is the largest healthcare project in Quebec and the second largest in Canada, as reported in Renew Canada's annual report for 2023.
The Vaudreuil-Soulanges hospital project is the largest caisson project in North America to date. The new 132,340 m² building will be divided into two pavilions. The first will house the majority of the project's ambulatory and support functions, as well as the auditorium, reception facilities and laboratories. The second, 13-storey pavilion will house the majority of critical functions, such as the emergency department, operating theatre, medical imaging and all care units.
In fact, a total of 404 beds will be accommodated in the future hospital. There will also be three shock rooms and 10 ZER chairs. The operating theatre will comprise 11 rooms.
The new hospital represents an investment of $2.5 billion. Initially scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the hospital could, in the best of all possible worlds, open in the summer of 2027.
