Tax season is just around the corner, and Revenu Québec would like to remind everyone of a few tips to help them prepare for it. Revenu Québec's ImpôtNet Québec service will go online in one month's time, on February 24. As of this date, it will be possible to file tax returns for the year 2024 using authorized software.

This is the simplest method, and the one chosen by the vast majority of individuals to meet their tax obligations and benefit from any tax credits and refunds to which they may be entitled. It's a good idea to file early in the tax season, which runs until April 30, 2025.

Tips for filing your return

To help you prepare for this important period in your tax obligations, Revenu Québec offers the following advice:

1- Start now to gather all the information and documents you need, such as your various statements, your notice of assessment for the previous year, and supporting documents for medical expenses, tuition fees or charitable donations. Please note that you don't have to enclose them with your tax return, but you should keep them in case we ask to see them.

2- Find out about the main changes for the 2024 tax year. These include a new form for cryptoasset reporting if you acquire, hold or use cryptoassets during a tax year. There are also various changes to Quebec Pension Plan contributions that may affect you.

3- Take note of the important dates for filing returns and paying balances.

4- Log on to the personalized, secure My Account space to access information about your tax file, as well as a host of practical online services. For example, you can sign up for direct deposit, update your address or banking information, consent to the sending of electronic-only communications, or view the processing status of your return.

5- Visit the justepourtous.ca digital platform for advice and answers to your general tax questions.

Information on the distribution of personal income tax return booklets

It should be noted that this is the last year in which the printed booklets used to file income tax returns will be distributed at locations other than Revenu Québec reception offices or Services Québec offices.

In fact, in an effort to continually improve its services, Revenu Québec has for some years now been mailing a printed booklet to all those who filed their tax returns using this method the previous year. This has had the effect of reducing the number of individuals who used a printed booklet distributed at a financial institution. In fact, last year, only 0.15% of individuals obtained a booklet in this way. Mailings to the individuals concerned will be sent out in the coming weeks.

It should also be noted that it is still possible for any individual to obtain a paper version of the tax return by ordering it over the Internet or by telephone. Revenu Québec supports all those who would like to change the way they file their tax return by answering their questions and publishing information on the subject on its website. Electronic filing reduces the risk of errors and processing times, and is also environmentally friendly.
