Usually reserved for people committing the worst crime in the Criminal Code, namely first-degree murder, Samuel Moderie, nicknamed the Tinder Rapist, received the same sentence - 25 years in prison. The Saint-Zotique resident was given an exemplary sentence by Judge Pierre Dupras at the Palais de justice de Montréal on Wednesday, January 22.

The man who will spend the next few decades behind bars was also declared a long-term offender. Since he was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in 2018 in a similar case, he inherited this status for a period of 10 years. This label will take effect upon his release from the penitentiary.

According to the evidence presented before the Tribunal, Moderie drugged, raped and filmed 13 women without their knowledge during the assaults, which began in July 2022. He met his prey via dating apps such as Tinder, Badoo and Jalf. The accused would visit his victims' homes, where he drugged them with sedatives and anxiety-reducing drugs.

The sentence imposed on the sexual sadist was a suggestion made by Crown prosecutor Jérôme Laflamme.Defense attorney Robert Bellefeuille felt that a 15-year prison sentence was sufficient for his client. According to the authorities, Moderie may have had other victims who have yet to be identified.

A report submitted to the court described the 30-year-old as a sexual pervert and voyeur who carried out his crimes with planning and predation. His risk of re-offending is considered high.
The document describes Moderie's aggression as cold and thoughtful, adding that he seeks total control over the victim through deception and manipulation.
