Amazon's closure: a look back at the official reactions
At around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, Amazon announced the closure of its seven warehouses in Quebec, including those in Coteau-du-Lac's Alta industrial park. Throughout the day, Néomédia spoke to a number of stakeholders to gather their reactions to this surprising news.
According to information provided by the multinational, the closure will take place within the next two months. In all, 1,800 employees will lose their jobs as managers, delivery and sorting center employees or independent contractors who handle deliveries. Workers earned between $20 and $21.50 an hour.
In Coteau-du-Lac, 350 employees learned of the bad news and will have to look for new jobs in the coming weeks. Subcontractor Intelcom will take over delivery and sorting operations.
The MNAs for Soulanges and Salaberry-Suroît, Marilyne Picard and Claude DeBellefeuille, were saddened by the news, as they explain in the text published this afternoon.
For her part, DEV Vaudreuil-Soulanges General Manager Joanne Brunet shared her astonishment with Néomédia, as mentioned in this article signed by Félix Sabourin.
Finally, the City of Coteau-du-Lac, via its mayor Andrée Brosseau, also reacted to Amazon's decision. She was reassuring, as you can read in the text published later the same day.
