Vaudreuil-Dorion firefighters help each other out tonight
A residence at 3 rue Victor-Léger in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield was heavily damaged by flames early on Friday, January 17. Salaberry-de-Valleyfield firefighters arrived on the scene at 12:58 a.m., as the residence was engulfed in flames.
The major fire was brought under control at 5:34 this morning, and the last fire crews returned to the fire station around 6:21. The case was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec, as the cause of the blaze could not be determined.
“According to our findings, the fire originated in the vicinity of the residence's garage. Certain elements observed on site that seemed suspicious prompted us to transfer the file to the SQ for further investigation. To support us in this intervention, we called in the Sainte-Barbe fire department and the Vaudreuil-Dorion ladder truck. A team from the Beauharnois Fire Department was on hand at the fire station to cover the area,” explains Christian Poulin of the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield IS.
The Community Emergency Measures Unit (UCMU) was also called in to support the firefighters. At the height of the response, some 30 firefighters were battling the blaze under the command of Operations Chief Alain Lauzon.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. “When we arrived, the four occupants of the residence - a couple, an elderly person and a little girl - had got out on their own. We managed to contain the fire to the affected residence. The two cars parked in the driveway were a total loss,” he concludes.
