At federal, provincial and even municipal level, the political class is reacting strongly to the resignation of the Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau.

Locally, Claude DeBellefeuille and Marilyne Picard had not yet commented on the news at the time of writing.

Vaudreuil MP Marie-Claude Nichols and Beauharnois MP Claude Reid had no comment.

In Quebec, François Legault said:

“Although our opinions have often differed, today I want to salute Justin Trudeau's public service and his commitment to Canada. We have major challenges ahead of us, particularly with the arrival of Donald Trump on January 20. I will continue to work with Mr. Trudeau, his successor and the current government to avoid these tariffs.”

Former Minister of Immigration, Francisation and Integration, Christine Fréchette, said.

“The next few weeks will be marked by a transition in the Canadian government. It remains important for the federal government to move forward on issues in the interests of Quebec businesses and the economy. This is all the more topical with the imminent arrival of Donald Trump. We need to work together to avoid the imposition of tariffs.”

At the federal level, former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland thanked the outgoing Prime Minister. “I thank Justin Trudeau for his years of service to Canada and Canadians. I wish him and his family all the best.”

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also commented on the news,

“Justin Trudeau has let you down time and time again. On housing and grocery prices. On health care. A new leader won't change a thing. The Liberals don't deserve another chance. The Conservatives want to seize the opportunity to damage you for the benefit of the top brass. You will pay the price for Pierre Poilievre's cuts.If you oppose Conservative cuts, if you oppose the rich getting richer while everyone else is left behind, support the NDP. You can have a government that works for you, for once.”

Finally, in second place in voting intentions according to the latest Léger poll conducted at the end of December, Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre commented:

“Nothing has changed.  All the Liberal MPs and leadership candidates have supported EVERYTHING Trudeau has done for 9 years, and now they want to deceive voters by swapping another Liberal face to continue ripping off Canadians for another 4 years, just like Justin Trudeau. The only way to fix what the Liberals have broken is to hold an election to elect common-sense Conservatives who will bring back Canada's promise.”
