Official reaction to Prime Minister's resignation
Claude DeBellefeuille salutes Justin Trudeau's public commitment
A few hours after the announcement of the resignation of the Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, the Member of Parliament for Salaberry-Suroît, Claude DeBellefeuille, who defends the colors of the Bloc Québécois, was keen to underline the commitment of the man who led Canada for nearly 10 years.
“Despite our political differences, I salute Justin Trudeau's public commitment. I believe he made the right decision to step down, and an election will have to be called as soon as his successor takes office. Regardless of the leader, regardless of the circumstances, there must be an election in the spring of 2025. At the start of this new year, I will continue to be on the ground and to meet with the people of Salaberry-Suroît to clearly demonstrate that it is the Bloc Québécois that best serves the interests of Quebecers,” she stated in a press release.
Mr. Trudeau has asked the President of the Liberal Party of Canada to begin the process of selecting a new leader, which should lead to a hiring decision in the coming weeks. The new leader will remain in office until his successor is appointed.
In addition, at the Prime Minister's request, Governor General Mary Simon has agreed to prorogue the parliamentary session until March 24.
