Every vehicle should be equipped with a first-aid kit containing everything you need to cope with the unexpected. Our Quebec winters, however, call for the inclusion of a few items to ensure you're well prepared. A small addition this year: the mask.

For peace of mind, CAA-Quebec suggests you consult its winter survival guide and its 12 essential items for a well-stocked winter emergency kit.

1 - A snow broom and scraper
There's a wide range of models to choose from, so take the time to select the one that's right for you. Make sure one end of the broom has a scraper, and that the bristles don't damage your vehicle's paintwork.

2 - A shovel
This will come in handy if you get stuck in the snow. Choose a compact shovel that won't clutter up the boot. Retractable models are ideal.

3 - A flashlight
A flashlight with a wide beam and different light intensities. Make sure you change the batteries regularly, or buy a model with rechargeable batteries. Some flashlights even feature a handy USB port.

4 - A blanket and warm clothing
The blanket must be waterproof, windproof and have an aluminized surface designed to reflect body heat. In the event of a breakdown, it will keep you warm until CAA-Quebec roadside assistance arrives. Alternatively, a fleece blanket may also do the trick, but will provide less protection from the wind. Keep a spare pair of gloves, toque and scarf on hand.

5 - A bag of abrasive and grip plates
Non-clumping litter and sand are very effective in overcoming ice and snow patches that can get in the way of your car's movements. Avoid putting a bag of salt in your trunk: it could cause rust. Even better: traction aids will help to free your vehicle from snow or ice.

6 - A rag or roll of paper towels
This will be much appreciated to soak up any liquid leaks, or to keep your hands clean during an unscheduled tire change.

7 - Booster cables and grip plates
In very cold weather, jumper cables can come in very handy if your car's battery is flat.

8 - Winter mats
Featuring deep grooves specially designed to collect water, snow and salt, winter models are made of a cold-resistant material that won't crack when the mercury drops.

9 - Windshield washer fluid
To face the winter weather cocktail, don't leave without a supply of windshield washer fluid enriched with an antifreeze that can withstand temperatures down to -40°Celsius.

10 - Dry snacks
In the event of a breakdown, you may have to wait many hours for help to arrive. Keep some non-perishable food in the car. Tender bars are an excellent choice.

11 - Water
Opt for reusable silicone bottles, which are more environmentally friendly and won't burst in the cold. Fill them with fresh water before you leave.

12 - An emergency kit
There are emergency kits on the market containing everything you need to get by in the event of a roadside mishap. To make life easier, choose a model that also contains a first-aid kit.
