In winter, when the cold days have lasted for several days, it's tempting to venture out on a waterway to skate, walk or snowmobile. But there are risks involved. Here are some safety tips to help you avoid the risks.

Around seven Quebecers die every year as a result of ice breaking under their weight, whether walking, fishing or snowmobiling. However, such incidents can be avoided.

The first thing to look for is the color of the ice. If it's blue or transparent, it's normally solid.

Next comes white ice, often covered with snow, which has a higher air content. Finally, avoid gray ice, often associated with a thaw.

A shallow lake takes less time to freeze, but can melt more quickly, especially on the banks due to the thickness of the ice.

If the watercourse has a high flow rate, such as a river, the ice formed is less resistant. It is also less solid near features such as docks, rocks and other objects in the water, as well as in the afternoon when the sun is shining.

If the weather often varied, layers would have formed on the river.

These may contain broken ice.Rain and snow accumulation weaken the ice cover.

Finally, there's nothing like checking for yourself. It's possible to drill a hole in different places. It's best not to go below 7 centimetres.
