The Municipal Council of Vaudreuil-Dorion adopted its brand-new Environmental Policy and Strategy on Monday, December 2nd. This updated version replaces the city's original environmental policy, which was first adopted in 2018 for a five-year period.

The goal of this policy is to reduce ecological impacts and preserve biodiversity while promoting adaptation to climate change, urban resilience, and sustainable development.

This policy is designed to be timeless and complements the city's other planning tools. Over time, concrete action plans will be added to address current and future environmental challenges.

It is the result of a rigorous process that began in February 2022, which included surveys conducted with the local population. It also takes into account the extensive public consultations held during the development of the previous policy.

"The success of this policy depends on the involvement of everyone, from citizens to businesses and organizations. Together, we have the power to make tangible changes by transforming our habits and making informed choices," said Mayor Guy Pilon.

Eight Key Environmental Themes
Eight key themes structure this policy, reflecting the main environmental issues, including biodiversity, urban agriculture and forestry, land use planning, infrastructure, waste management, financial resilience, public safety, and the green city.

Climate change is addressed within each of these themes to represent both current and future environmental challenges, as well as their evolution over time.

"United for Climate" Declaration
In addition to adopting its Environmental Policy and Strategy, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion also signed the "United for Climate" commitment declaration during the same Municipal Council session.

This declaration, put forward by the Union des municipalités du Québec, underscores the leading role of municipalities in the fight against climate change. It also calls on elected officials to ensure that climate issues remain a permanent driving force in their decision-making.
