At its regular meeting on October 21, the Municipal Council of Les Coteaux announced its intention to adopt a $268,000 borrowing by-law to acquire water meters. Following the example of several municipalities in the region, by September 2025, the Municipality will be purchasing and installing water meters at several locations on its territory.

At its meeting on Monday, November 18, the elected officials approved Borrowing By-law 320.

The use of drinking water is an issue that has concerned us for several years, and we need to raise awareness among citizens every year. The subject is also of concern to the government, which is encouraging us to set up a program for the gradual installation of drinking water systems on our territory, in businesses, industries and enterprises. For residences, we have determined that the next 60 new buildings will be equipped with water meters. If we don't meet this target by the deadline, we'll have to make another decision to get there," explained Pamela Nantel, Director General of the Municipalité des Coteaux, at the end of the October meeting.

By the deadline, a total of 160 water meters will have been installed on municipal territory.Around one hundred will be installed in ICI (industrial, commercial and institutional) premises, while the remaining sixty or so will be installed in new residential buildings.

This provincial government project aims to counter global warming and reduce the use of drinking water. The installation of water meters in businesses and residences is designed to make users more aware of their consumption, with a view to avoiding waste and keeping this precious resource in sufficient supply for future generations.
