Prevention tips for safe trick-or-treating
Tonight, young and old alike will be taking to the streets to celebrate Halloween. To mark the occasion, the province's police forces are asking all road users to adopt safe driving habits, and would like to remind everyone of a few safety tips for children.
This Thursday, thousands of children will take to the streets of Vaudreuil-Soulanges for the traditional Halloween trick-or-treating. As every year, police officers will be on hand to ensure their safety and that of all road users.
It's important for everyone, young and old, pedestrians and motorists alike, to be attentive and respect the Highway Safety Code, as well as traffic signs, at all times. For children, this also means wearing make-up rather than masks, travelling in groups, being visible, and always crossing roads and streets in the appropriate places.
Here are a few tips for trick-or-treaters to keep in mind, so that trick-or-treating goes smoothly:
- Make sure you're visible by wearing light-colored clothing with reflective stripes;
- Wear short clothing to avoid tripping;
- Opt for make-up rather than masks to see and hear better;
- Use a flashlight for better visibility;
- Walk only one side of the street at a time, avoiding unnecessary running and crossing;
- Cross streets at intersections and obey traffic signs;
- Inform your parents of your route and expected return time;
- Ring doorbells as a group or in the company of an adult, and always wait outside houses;
- Refuse to approach or get into a vehicle without parental permission;
- Examine treats with parents to ensure they are safe to eat.
