As the deadline given by the Bloc Québécois to the Trudeau government to restore fairness to seniors aged 65 to 74 and protect supply management expires, MP Claude DeBellefeuille denounces the Trudeau government's abandonment of supply-managed seniors and farm families.

The Bloc Québécois had given the Trudeau government until October 29 to ensure the final implementation of Bills C-319 on the 10% increase in old age security for 65- to 74-year-olds, and C-282, which excludes supply management from future international trade agreements, two Bloc bills that received all-party support in the House of Commons.

“These two bills are essential for Quebecers, especially retirees, whose purchasing power was severely weakened even before the pandemic, while the cost of living rose sharply as a result of the inflation that followed it,” says MP Claude DeBellefeuille.

“Yet the Liberal government has not responded to our demands, and has been intransigent in the face of our desire to support seniors and agricultural producers. By refusing to pass these two bills despite all-party support in the House of Commons, the government is turning its back on seniors and farmers,” adds DeBellefeuille.

In October, dozens of citizens and agricultural producers from Salaberry-Suroît travelled to Ottawa to demonstrate, alongside Claude DeBellefeuille, their support for the Bloc Québécois' demands regarding Bills C-319 and C-282.

“The Bloc Québécois will continue its parliamentary work as long as Parliament is convened, and according to the same analytical grid: we will support what is good for Quebec, we will work to improve what can be improved, and we will vote against what is bad. We won't abandon these important struggles for seniors and farmers, bringing these issues back at every opportunity,” concludes the MNA for Salaberry-Suroît.
