For the first time in many years, the 2024 edition of the provincial cross-country championships was held in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, much to the delight of the Club d'athlétisme de Vaudreuil-Dorion.

On October 26, live from Parc Nature Les Forestiers in Saint-Lazare, over 1,300 athletes from 14 regional authorities, 43 Cégeps and colleges, 10 universities and federated civilian clubs took to the starting line.

From the organizing committee's point of view, the event was a great success, bringing together thousands of young school athletes and at least 2,000 spectators who turned out to cheer them on. The weather was on our side, and all the feedback we received - from participants, coaches, volunteers and visitors alike - was positive. We're very happy,” says Claude David of the Club d'athlétisme de Vaudreuil-Dorion, who oversaw the event in the region.

The event was held over several days in October, culminating last Saturday with the participation of high school, college and university athletes.

On Friday, October 11, school-level runners were in action during the RSEQ Lac-Saint-Louis Cross-Country Festival. This was followed by the Cross des couleurs on Sunday, October 13, with a South-West collegiate conference final. As with Saturday's sporting event, runners taking part in these autumnal sporting events competed against each other on circuits ranging from 2 to 8 km.

As with major sporting competitions such as the Jeux du Québec, a bid had to be submitted for the chance to host the Provincial Cross Country Championships in your neck of the woods. In this process, Vaudreuil-Soulanges was up against Quebec City. Next year, the Provincial Cross Country Championships will also be held in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC.

Major competitions

This was the first time since 2017 that all school categories were represented at the Provincial Championships. At least 2,000 citizens from the region came to cheer on the athletes on the course. We ran out of parking spaces at Les Forestiers nature center to accommodate them. Everyone appreciated it. The site is truly exceptional. We're very satisfied, we've achieved our objectives ,” he says.

Among the competition's partners was the Collège Noir et Or, whose players were responsible for setting up and dismantling the site on October 26.
