Until October 17, all Quebec police forces, in collaboration with Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) roadside inspectors, will be stepping up their interventions as part of the concerted national operation against distracted driving and reckless behavior.

In addition to interventions on the road network throughout Quebec, an awareness campaign will be deployed on the various social media platforms of police organizations and the SAAQ. The aim of the campaign is to remind road users of the importance of complying with the Highway Safety Code and adopting prudent behaviour at all times. The theme of the new campaign is “Sur la route on se conduit bien”.

From 2020 to 2022, reckless behaviour was present in 50% of collisions involving personal injury. This is an increase compared to the period 2010 to 2012, when the proportion was 47%. Reckless behaviour includes a number of actions by road users which, in addition to being irritating for other road users, contravene the Highway Safety Code and may jeopardize their safety.

The reckless or inappropriate behaviors that will be particularly monitored as part of this intervention are:

- Respect for traffic signs, including stop signs, red lights, school bus signs and yield signs;

- Reckless actions, including those likely to compromise safety and successive overtaking;

- Following too closely;

- Distracted driving, including cell phone use while driving.

This concerted national operation is organized in partnership with the Association des directeurs de police du Québec, the Sûreté du Québec, the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau and the SAAQ.

For more information, please visit the Sûreté du Québec's Twitter feed and Facebook page, as well as those of municipal police forces and the SAAQ.
