Meteor shower
Perseids 2024: a beautiful night between August 11 and 12
Every year, the summer night sky around mid-August is full of surprises. The shooting stars meteor shower is a magnificent spectacle for all astronomy enthusiasts, but also for those who love to admire the starry sky.
The reason why the August sky is so eagerly awaited is that it offers a unique spectacle. At this time of year, the Earth is approaching the orbit of the periodic comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. It's the billions of dust particles in its orbit that create the meteor showers.
This year, the meteor shower is expected to be at its most intense between the mornings of August 11 and August 12.
NASA has also informed the public that the waxing moon will be 53% full, which could make for difficult viewing, without spoiling the evening. Weather remains the most important criterion for enjoying the moment to the full.
The nights at the end of July/beginning of August, as well as those following August 12, are not to be overlooked. In fact, even if the intensity is not as high, these nights could also be fabulous shows, if the weather conditions are right.
In fact, the shooting stars are active at lower intensity from mid-July until the third week of August. So one thing to do: open your eyes, and make your wishes!
