Forty years ago, the Town of Pointe-du-Moulin and the municipality of the parish of Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot merged to form the new "Municipalité de la paroisse Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot".

The new organization AVENIR ÎLE PERROT, which advocates the amalgamation of the island's four municipalities, says this 40th anniversary is an opportunity to recall that, in 1984, the island's municipalities decided it was in the best interests of their citizens to merge.

AVENIR ÎLE PERROT notes that this amalgamation leaves a favorable impression on the collective memory. "The citizens of Pointe-du-Moulin and Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot who lived through the merger feel that it was a good thing. No one would want to go back to the way things were," says AVENIR ÎLE PERROT president Francine St-Denis.

In 1984, after months of negotiations, elected officials from the Ville de Pointe-du-Moulin and the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot agreed to merge to form a new municipality of 2,415 people.

Among the arguments in favor of the merger were infrastructure maintenance costs. Three years earlier, the Town of Pointe-Moulin had joined the new Régie de l'eau de l'île Perrot, created at the instigation of the Ministère des Affaires municipales.

Despite the pooling of its water treatment facilities, Pointe-du-Moulin's council members considered merging with Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot in the interests of their residents.

This merger reduced the number of municipalities on Île Perrot from five to four. Created in 1958, the Town of Pointe-du-Moulin existed for 26 years.
