On Thursday, the Ville de Vaudreuil-Dorion officially inaugurated its new fire station at 85, route de Lotbinière in the Dorion sector, in the presence of Mayors Guy Pilon and Peter Zytynsky, respectively of Vaudreuil-Dorion and Pointe-des-Cascades, as well as a number of elected officials, members of the Fire Department and invited guests.

The project, for which construction began in March 2022, received $4,500,000 in financial assistance from the Quebec government under the Réfection et construction des infrastructures municipales (RÉCIM) program.

The total cost of the project, including demolition, construction, professional services, temporary housing for the fire station and furniture, is $14.9 million. In addition to the Quebec government grant, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion will receive $2.6 million from the 2019-2024 Quebec Gas Tax and Contribution Program (TECQ), as well as $58,000 in financial assistance from Energir (New Efficient Construction component of the Energy Efficiency Program - Efficient Construction and Renovation). In total, the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion was able to benefit from almost $7.2 million in subsidies.

"This will be the second main fire station to cover the Vaudreuil-Dorion area, with firefighters on duty 24/7. Its location will also enable us to serve the Municipality of Pointe-des-Cascades. I would like to underline the excellent collaboration between the cities of Vaudreuil-Dorion and Pointe-des-Cascades. This intermunicipal agreement has made it possible to obtain a considerable financial contribution from the Quebec government. This major investment confirms the importance that the municipal council attaches to the revitalization of the Harwood - de Lotbinière sector, and to the safety and protection of citizens," said Mayor Guy Pilon.

Currently, fire station 11 is home to one officer and three firefighters, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. More recently, two preventionists have joined the Fire Station 11 team and are working there full-time.

"This fire station is exceptional for the area. The city council wanted to set the tone for the requalification of the Harwood PPU (Projet particulier d'urbanisme). It was really important to be up to date and to have a really interesting building. It's the first step of many in the project to revitalize the area," said City Manager Olivier Van Neste.

The new fire station was designed by Les architectes Labonté-Marcil, in collaboration with engineering firms FNX-Innov and CBTEC, and landscape architects Rousseau Lefebvre. The building was constructed by Espace Construction.

The work involved demolishing the existing building at 85 route de Lotbinière and building a new fire station. The two-storey, 1,900 m2 building is totally self-sufficient in energy, thanks to a generator that supplies the building with 100% power in the event of a power failure.

The first floor includes a garage area with doors, a checkroom, four offices, a training and emergency measures room, and storage rooms. There is also a decontamination room. The second floor includes a multi-purpose room, two dormitories, a dining area, a rest area and a kitchen.

"When our firefighters come back, it's important to have a place to recharge their batteries, to take a step back and take a break before answering another call," added Stéphane Massicotte, Acting Director of Vaudreuil-Dorion's Fire Safety Department. "In addition to firefighting, firefighters at Fire Station 11 are responsible for nautical specialties and rescue in isolated environments. Our Fire Station 11 team is also called upon for medical calls, whether to Pointe-des-Cascades or the Dorion sector. In addition to specialized equipment, the fire station is equipped with an aerial ladder, a fire truck and a tanker. These are in addition to the Fire Department's own equipment," he concluded.
