The Sûreté du Québec confirmed this Tuesday evening, February 20, that an 18-year-old man has been arrested by police in connection with the fire that broke out earlier today at the Walmart in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

In the last few hours, management announced that the store would be closed indefinitely due to smoke, water and fire damage.

"The individual in question is due to be interviewed by investigators within the next few hours," explains police spokeswoman Hélène Saint-Pierre. They will attempt to determine his role in the events that occurred around 9:30 a.m.

Vaudreuil-Dorion firefighters, assisted by the Saint-Lazare and Pincourt brigades, were called to the Boulevard de la Gare business after a fire broke out inside.

The blaze, which started in the household products section, was quickly contained by firefighters. Around 30 firefighters were on site at the height of the incident.

The case had been transferred to the Sûreté du Québec due to evidence at the scene suggesting that the blaze might be of criminal origin.

One person suffered smoke inhalation, but was not taken to hospital.
