A fire broke out this Tuesday, February 20, inside the Walmart superstore at 3050 de la Gare, Vaudreuil-Dorion. Vaudreuil-Dorion firefighters arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m. with flames visible inside.

The blaze was quickly contained by firefighters. Some thirty firefighters were on site at the height of the response. The Service de sécurité incendie called on the Saint-Lazare and Pincourt brigades to assist in the response. "I'm very proud of my team. The complexity of this intervention was in part due to the ventilation and the height of the ceiling, which made it difficult to evacuate the smoke," said Vaudreuil-Dorion Fire Department Operations Division Chief Stéphane Massicotte.

The cause of the fire, which originated in the household products section, is under investigation by the Sûreté du Québec." Evidence discovered on site suggests that the fire may be of suspicious and criminal origin. An investigator and a fire scene technician are on site this afternoon to learn more about the causes and circumstances of the fire. No injuries have been reported. However, one person suffered smoke inhalation, but was not taken to hospital," says police spokesman Louis-Philippe Ruel.

Due to the presence of food on site, the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) was notified of the incident. The nearby McDonald's restaurant welcomed Walmart employees during the intervention.

The company has announced the indefinite closure of its Vaudreuil-Dorion branch. Damage to the interior caused by water, smoke and flames amounts to tens of thousands of dollars, according to information obtained by Néomédia.
