The Town of Pincourt's Public Security department wishes to inform the public that a fisher was seen on Town territory today, February 2.

The fisher, a cousin of the wolverine and a member of the mustelid family, is a dark brown weasel. The animal measures close to a metre, including a bushy tail of around thirty centimetres, and has strong, short, five-toed legs with semi-retractable claws and a powerful jaw.

It is a solitary animal that feeds on small mammals (red squirrel, hare, porcupine, small rodents and sometimes cats and small dogs). The fisher is also very adept in trees, but captures most of its prey on the ground.

It's a good idea to be vigilant, and not to leave your pets free and unattended.

Here are two tips to reduce negative interactions with pekans:

- Restrict access to garbage and pet food;

- Keep pets and poultry indoors, especially at night.

It's also important not to intervene if you notice the presence of a fisher, as it may react aggressively if startled.

For municipal patrol requests, dial 3-1-1.

For questions or comments about the municipal patrol, call 514 453-8981, ext. 203.
