Simon Legault, store manager of Maxi in Coteau-du-Lac, took advantage of the store's official opening to make a donation to the Moisson Sud-Ouest food bank. Mr. Legault hopes this will be the first of many collaborations.
"The Maxi banner aims to be 0 waste by 2030. It's coming. Moisson Sud-Ouest will be our food aid partner. In concrete terms, this means that the regional food bank will be the beneficiary of our "guignolées" or collections of donations and money that we organize each year. If some of our products have passed their expiration date, but are still consumable, we will send them to this organization for redistribution", he explains.
On Thursday, October 12, at the opening of the big-box food store, a cheque for $2,500 was presented to Moisson Sud-Ouest to support its mission.
In addition to being proactive in environmental matters, notably by opting to compost expired products, Maxi also applies the Flashfood initiative in its stores.
What does it involve? "We reduce the price of foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables, etc. that are approaching their expiration date. It's a good way of reducing food waste" he concludes.
