A resolution and a notice of motion to this effect were on the agenda
Coteau-du-Lac wants to lower the speed limit in two areas of its territory
At their regular meeting on August 8, the elected officials of Coteau-du-Lac ratified a resolution to reduce the speed limit on Route 201, and tabled a notice of motion to do the same on Chemin Rivière-Delisle South and North.
In the first case, the sector targeted by the request sent to the Ministry of Transport is located on Route 201, between the railroad tracks and the northern limit of the territory of the City of Coteau-du-Lac.
"This is a second request. A few years ago, we sent the same request to the Ministère des Transports, which turned it down. Since this is a tourist sector with a lot of vehicle traffic, we thought it would be a good idea to readdress the situation with the provincial government," explained Mayor Andrée Brosseau.
Specifically, Coteaulac's elected officials would like to see the speed limit on Route 201, between the entrance to the industrial park and the Rivière Rouge Golf Club, reduced to 70 km/hour. At present, 90 km/hour is permitted on this stretch of road under provincial jurisdiction.
Due to the high risk of accidents on Route 201 in this sector, the council wishes to maintain the speed limit at 70 km between the railroad tracks and the northern boundary of the territory of the City of Coteau-du-Lac. The purpose of this request is to ensure the safety of motorists who use this road on a daily basis, as stated in the resolution proposed by Patrick Delforge.
Chemin Rivière-Delisle South and North also in the crosshairs of elected officials
The second speed-related subject that attracted attention at the August 8 meeting was the following: Avis de motion et dépôt de projet (RMH 399-2020) visant à réduire la limite de vitesse du chemin la passer de 70 km à 50 km.
On these streets, elected officials would like to see the current speed limit of 70 km reduced to 50 km.District 6 Councillor Patrick Delforge has filed a notice of motion to this effect. "However, I'm concerned that this change could encourage police officers to issue more tickets. Is it possible to ask them to patrol this area more often to avoid speeding?" he asked Mayor Andrée Brosseau. The latter said she would mention it and make the request.
On this subject, District 5 Councillor Christine Arseneault, who sits on the Road Safety Committee, said she could make a request to the City of Coteau-du-Lac's sponsoring police officer."He often reports back to us following similar requests. We can ask him to circulate in the area a few times during the day and report back to us on the situation. We've often solved problems this way."
Citizens who drive through or stay in the area and note any problematic situations can contact the Sûreté du Québec station to report it if the danger is immediate. "It's the first thing to do for rapid intervention, if you don't feel safe or you witness a dangerous problem. Don't hesitate," testified District 3 Councillor David-Lee Amos.
In closing, Ms. Arseneault indicated what to do if the situation is not urgent and a citizen nevertheless wishes to report a problem on municipal territory." You can send an e-mail to the Town, to the attention of the Road Safety Committee, or directly to me or Mr. Amos, who are members of the committee. We meet about once a month, except during the summer season, to find solutions to the problems referred to us."
Since the notice of motion was tabled at the August meeting, by-law RMH 399-2020 relating to traffic could be adopted at the September 12 meeting.
