Faced with a wave of resignations from its municipal council, the City of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac has been administered by the Commission municipale du Québec since last May.

On March 1, councillors David Yee and Mei-Lin Yee announced that they were stepping down from their positions as councillors. Differences of opinion with other council members and with the former general management were cited as the reason for Mr. and Mrs. Yee's departure.

On May 3, Councillor Lilianne Besner announced that she was stepping down from her seat. Ms. Besner also cited certain differences with the organization to explain her decision.

In addition to these departures, one councillor is currently on parental leave, and the date of his return to the council table has yet to be confirmed.

As a result, there are insufficient councillors to make decisions.

It is therefore the Commission municipale du Québec that replaces the municipal council and adopts resolutions in the council's place so that the municipality can function and municipal services can be given to citizens.

‍The two members appointed to temporarily administer the municipality and maintain services to citizens are:

- Me Mélanie Robert

- Me Martin St-Laurent

Until quorum is restored, council meetings are suspended and the CMQ will adopt the necessary measures for the administration of the municipality.

Trusteeship versus provisional administration

It is important to specify that the Ville de Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac is not under trusteeship.

In fact, when a municipality is under trusteeship, it benefits from support from the CMQ to resolve its operating problems. In the case of trusteeship, the municipal council is still functional and continues to administer the municipality. However, all its decisions must be approved by the Commission.

In the case of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac, provisional administration is an exceptional measure enabling the CMQ to administer the municipality while awaiting the election of new council members.

By-elections by the end of the year

For his part, Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac mayor Mario Tremblay is very optimistic that the situation will soon be resolved.

"We have received approval from the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation to hold by-elections by the end of October. We will then be able to resume our usual administration and continue with all the files and projects we have announced. In the meantime, the municipal council and I will continue to do what we were elected to do, which is to serve our community and support our citizens during this period.  We are more than confident that the new council to be formed in the autumn will take over the reins of our Municipality with brio to continue our major projects, and that together, we will emerge stronger", said Tremblay.

‍The Municipality of Vaudreuil-sur-le-Lac will remain in constant communication with citizens to advise them of the situation, and the date of the by-elections will be known shortly.
