The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) de la MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges is warning residents throughout the territory that fraudsters are currently active in the area. More than 12 cases have been reported since February.

The fraudsters pretend to be an advisor from the financial institution of the person they are contacting and claim the victims have been defrauded.

In some cases, the fraudster may mention a credit card has been cloned or suspicious transactions have been reported.

The victim is asked to hand over their cards and personal identification numbers (PINs) in an envelope. The fraudsters or their accomplices then collect the envelope from the victim's home.

In some cases, the name of the financial institution appears on the phone's call display even though the number is fraudulent. When people call the number to verify the information, the fraudster replies with the name of the financial institution.

The SQ advises anyone who receives this type of unsolicited call to immediately call the official telephone number of their financial institution or advisor to verify the matter. They cannot, however, retrieve bank cards with your PIN.

The SQ encourages everyone who has received a fraudulent or suspicious call within the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region to immediately report the matter by calling 310-4141 or *4141 from a cell phone.
