The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced a reduction in resources dedicated to the search for Léo Dufour, a 22-year-old man from Vaudreuil-Dorion, who has been missing since November 30.

An avid hiker, Léo Dufour was last seen last Friday after reaching the summit of Allen Mountain, located in the Adirondacks in New York State. He was expected to return home the following Saturday but never arrived.

Since December 1, 59 forest rangers have traversed nearly 400 miles on foot. The New York State Police Aviation Unit deployed two helicopters to transport search teams, drop supplies, and conduct aerial searches whenever weather conditions permitted.

“Dozens of New York State Forest Rangers led the search efforts in rugged mountain terrain under harsh winter weather conditions. Rangers found one set of tracks leading from the subject’s vehicle, but recent snowfall significantly hampered tracking efforts”, the DEC reported.

After over eight days of intensive efforts, including analysis of cell phone data and terrain expertise on Allen Mountain, forest rangers have been unable to locate Dufour. Given the extreme conditions and the lack of new leads, the mission has transitioned to a recovery operation.

As of midnight on December 9, the search will shift to a limited continuous search, meaning active field operations will be suspended.

"Efforts will now focus on limited aerial searches, backcountry patrols, and outreach to hikers and visitors in the area. When an active search in the Adirondacks is scaled back, it typically transitions to periodic monitoring. Rangers remain vigilant during routine patrols and are ready to act on any new leads or evidence. Seasonal changes, such as snowmelt, may also reveal clues, and the area will continue to be monitored," the authorities stated.

The DEC remains committed to supporting families and communities, providing updates as long as the case remains open. Authorities assure that if new leads or evidence emerge, operations will resume immediately.

The DEC is urging the public to report any sightings or information that could assist in the search.
